In 1958 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Territorial Army a steam locomotive BR Standard Class 7 (Britannia Class) No. 70048 was named ‘The Territorial Army 1908–1958’ by the Duke of Norfolk.
On Saturday 8th November 2008 at the Great Central Railway station, Quorn, 70013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’ will be temporarily re-named ‘The Territorial Army 1908-2008’ by HRH The Duke of Gloucester.
The re-naming represents a fitting link with the 1958 ceremony and the engine itself will act as a living memorial to all those members of the Territorial Army who have given their lives in the service of their country. Renaming of Oliver Cromwell by kind permission of the National Railway Museum.
This is a public event and everyone is invited to attend the ceremony at Quorn Yard which will also include a silence as an act of remembrance. The gate at Quorn will open at 10am.
Oliver Cromwell will be on display at Quorn for the majority of the morning. There will also be a special mail drop train at the morning in Quorn carrying first day covers to mark the centenary.
