The Aspergers Flyer

DSCF377420 August, 8 November and 27 December

Ever wondered what it must be like to travel behind a named train like the Royal Scot or Flying Scotsman during its prime?

Travel on The Aspergers Flyer and The Adventuring Autisticman, learn about Aspergers and Autism, and step back in time on a vintage steam service and most importantly, have fun! On each of the above dates one of our Great Central Railway locos will carry a headboard, just like the one on the left.

Watch the countryside role by, take time out at the line's perfectly period cafes and all while the kids are on holiday so why not bring them along to this affordable family attraction for a great time?

Charters 4 Change are a new charitable group which operates The Aspergers Flyer and The Adventuring Autisticman and were born from Asperger's Fundraiser, a group that set up a lot of the groundwork that enables us to run our charity specials. We tour the country running trains like these.

90733We are currently in the middle of the 'Asperger's Anniversary', a celebration and commemoration of Hans Asperger's brave work to stick up for those with Autism in WWII. 70 years have now passed since Hans did his first studies and we'd be delighted if you'd join us to help celebrate his courage.

Further details will be posted in due course, based on information we receive from Charters 4 Change.

Canopy Restoration Plaque Unveiled

MP Nicky Morgan unveils NHRA plaqueOn the Friday of the January Gala, Platform 2 at Loughborough Station was even busier than usual, as the plaque won by the GCR at the National Railway Heritage Awards was officially unveiled by Nicky Morgan MP. The Award was in the Station Environment category and recognised the railway’s achievement in fully restoring the canopy over the Station, as well as the numerous other improvements which were carried out at the same time.

Guests included six representatives of the NRHA, including the two judges who recommended that the award be given to the GCR, as well as the mastermind behind the project, former GCR director Tony Sparks. Tony spoke eloquently about the scale of the project and how it was undertaken, thanking all the volunteers and contractors who brought the scheme to fruition.

He was followed by Andy Savage of the NRHA who congratulated the GCR on such a magnificent achievement, and then Nicky Morgan MP (who describes herself as ‘the MP for the Great Central Railway’!) officially unveiled the blue plaque, following which the guests enjoyed a trip on the 14.30 departure.

BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No.92214 “Cock o the North” has been purchased by GCR Director, Mr Michael Gregory of Cromwell Tools for the dedicated use at Great Central Railway Plc. The Locomotive has been purchased from Mr Stuart Whitter of PV Premier Ltd and has come to us from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Originally intended to visit the GCR for the Winter Gala over the weekend of 25th to 26th January, the locomotive will now stay permanently.

Bill Ford, Managing Director of the Great Central Railway plc said “No.92214 is a magnificent addition to the GCR’s already impressive locomotive fleet and being in such immaculate condition will prove a great attraction to our many visitors. 92214 will give us a great boost as we move forward to reunify the railway north and south of the Midland Main Line and open the planned museum at Leicester North”.

Stuart said  "Our experience has given us confidence that No.92214 will be in the best of hands at the GCR".

“On behalf of the railway we would like to thank Stuart for the very professional way in which the transaction has been completed” Bill continued "It was also fantastic to see Stuart driving again on the GCR!"

“The railway’s sincere thanks are extended to Michael Gregory and his team at Cromwell Tools for securing this wonderful loco for GCR’s benefit” Bill concluded.
