2009
Friday 11th September – “Steam in Scotland, Part 1” – This journey north of the border begins at that mecca of
railway enthusiasts, Carlisle, and then heads northwards , covering both the Caledonian and the Glasgow and
South Western routes to Glasgow, also visiting the line through Ayr to Stranraer. Our guide will be Chris Banks, drawing from his vast collection of Colourail slides, augmented with his own material.
Friday 9th October – “The Midland Railway through the Peak District” - This spectacular main line, the route of
the St. Pancras to Manchester express, “The Palatine”, is described and illustrated by Buxton resident, John Morten, with images of the line north of Derby depicting the scene from the 1930’s to the 1970’s.
Friday 13th November – “The G.C.R. – Forward to Ruddington!” – To celebrate this 40th anniversary year,
G.C.R.Director, Tom Ingall, gives an illustrated presentation describing the achievements and future developments for the “Greater G.C.R.”. Included will be a film featuring 60163 Tornado, which was a great attraction on the railway.
Friday 11th December – “Main Line Steam, 2009, on Video.” - Karl Jauncey and Dave Richards, of “Preserved
Steam on Video”, return again to present the very best of this years spectacular steam action on Britain’s main
lines.
2010
Friday 8th January – “Irish Surprises” - Author, contributor to the railway press, and accomplished
photographer, Colin Boocock, describes the interesting variety of motive power, (including the horse!), and
the changes to the railways throughout the Emerald Isle over the last 50 years.
Friday 12th February – “The North Wales Coast Line – Part 1” - The first section of a comprehensive trilogy covering the main line to Holyhead begins at Chester, where David Scudamore illustrates this historic town’s
railway connections, then heads westwards towards Prestatyn.
Friday 12th March – “The Paul Riley Commemorative Show” - The pictures, taken in the 1960’s by, and
which celebrate the memory of, renowned photographer, Paul Riley, are kindly presented by his friend
and fellow photographer, Tony Bowles, in this Powerpoint presentation.
All meetings are held at St. Bartholomews Church Hall, Church Lane, Quorn, near Loughborough,
commencing at 7.30pm, on the second Friday of the month, from September to March inclusive.
Refreshments should be available during the interval. Admission is free, although a collection is held to
defer costs. Any surplus is used to fund various projects on the G.C.R. EVERYONE IS WELCOME.
