Area Groups

The Friends of the Great Central Main Line has two Area Groups at present and wishes to increase that number.

The Area Groups provide a series of evenings of talks, slides and films on a whole range of railway topics not limited to just the Great Central Railway. However, they do provide a forum for members to meet and discuss progress on the railway and the latest project progress.

The meetings are not limited to members only but family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend so that the message about our excellent railway may be spread far and wide.

Leicester Area Group

The GCR Leicester Area Supporters Group have drawn up a varied and exciting programme to entertain us during the autumn and winter period.  As usual the meetings will be held at St. Bartholomews Church Hall, Church Lane, Quorn commencing at 7.30pm..  To whet your appetite here are the details for the meetings to be held up to the end of 2023:

September 8th:  Jack Arthur Shaw. The history of Quorn & Woodhouse station.  Jack has recently been appointed as Station Master at Quorn & Woodhouse Station so there is no-one better placed to bring us the history of our local station.

October 13th:  Alan Godber.  “Don’t jump”.  The Great Central Railway in Loughborough was once the scene of a tragic, fatal railway accident.  Alan has researched and written about this event and brings us the background to it as well as revealing the lives of the people involved in this 1933 tragedy.

November 10th:  Richard Binding.  The history of the GWR main line.  Richard continues his series of illustrated talks on the main line from Penzance to Paddington.  Tonight we begin at Bristol but how far will we get?  Richard will reveal the fascinating history of this important route.

December 8th.  Graham Langer.  Building the most powerful passenger locomotive in Britain.  They built “Tornado”, now another “lost” locomotive is being recreated in the P2 class 2-8-2 “Prince of Wales”.  Come and hear how this fascinating project is progressing.

Admission is free but a collection will be made for a GCR project.  Make a note in your diaries now!
