Goods Galore Gala – 12th & 13th May 2018

Our goods-themed showcase of how Britain's railways moved goods around the country, becoming a lifeline to towns and villages ahead of the age of mass road transportation.

Expect to see 6 goods trains in service alongside a frequent passenger service with a named express journey each day, and shunting demonstrations.

We have 6 steam locomotives and 1 diesel loco in action all weekend including 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" and five other locomotives from the home fleet.

Goods Galore is a unique action-packed event with a large number of train movements only possible on GCR's double track. We're showcasing a large selection of goods vehicles alongside our usual passenger fleet to recreate a busy main line in the age of steam.

Main attractions

  • A large selection of goods trains including: Permanent Way train, Windcutters, Mixed Freight, Mountsorrel Goods, Box Van train and Parcels trains.


  • Breakdown train at the end of each day with our freshly painted crane.

Event programme.

An event programme will be available free of charge to ticket holders for the gala while stocks last. This will also include the full Working Timetable.

Other attractions

Quorn & Woodhouse station - Classic and Vintage Vehicle Festival

We're expecting to have a large number of classic vehicles on display during the weekend. Entry to the event is free to ticket holders for Goods Galore.


Real Ale: At Quorn, in the tin shed bar, we have real ales and ciders, with a selection from the range below . Enjoy a pint in the Real Ale Bar.  We are serving up a selection of real ales and ciders, including the popular 'Raleway Ale', from the Nottingham Brewery in a friendly atmosphere. The bar is open from 11.30am each day until late on Saturday and 5.00pm on Sunday

Express train: Travelling non-stop from Loughborough to Leicester North. A rare opportunity to travel on an 8-coach steam hauled express. The crossing gates at Quorn & Woodhouse will be locked to allow the passage of this service at 25mph through the platform.


Leicester North - Travelling Post Office museum.

Two Travelling Post Office vehicles will be stabled in the platform at Leicester North and will be open to visitors during the weekend as a TPO museum.


Real Ale Train (Saturday evening - pre-booking essential) - this popular service is operating on Saturday 12th May. See the Real Ale Train event page for details.

We will be serving cask beers from Nottingham Brewery, along with 3 Piers and Double Top. The train will be departing at 18.30.


Take the train to the Tin Shed at Quorn (Saturday evening):

Departing Loughborough at 1830, 1900, 2000 and 2050.

Departing Quorn for Loughborough at 1934, 2027, 2104 and 2154.

Return, single and short hop tickets will not be available. Return tickets may be purchased after 3 pm each day at the prices applicable on a normal operating weekend (£17 for adults, £16 senior concession, £9 children, etc.)

  1. Members of Friends of the FoGCML are entitled to Privilege fares upon production of membership card.
  2. Heritage Railway Association passes will NOT be valid at this event.
  3. Working members of other heritage railways with whom GCR has reciprocal arrangements for reduced fares will be eligible for Privilege fares upon production of valid membership cards and work permits.
  4. Same arrangements apply as in 1. above for holders of ex British Rail and Train Operating Company passes.
  5. Platform tickets at Loughborough and Quorn (including Quorn car park and yard) are priced at £5 – these can be offset against runabout tickets purchased for the Gala.


Travel news - M1 diversion north of Loughborough.

Visitors arriving from north of Loughborough via the M1 should please be aware of a short diversion between junctions 23A and 24 which may cause some delays to traffic.

Quorn & Woodhouse
Postcode: LE12 8AG
The field adjacent to Quorn & Woodhouse Station (over the bridge when travelling from A6 and Quorn village, on the left hand side towards Woodhouse) will be available. A charge of £3 per car per day will apply (no exceptions) for parking in the adjacent field; the station yard will not be available except for disabled (please refer below).

On-street parking in the immediate vicinity of Quorn & Woodhouse station is subject to Council-operated parking restrictions.

Entrance to the Gala at Quorn & Woodhouse Station will be via the stairs leading from the road bridge onto the platform (except for disabled).

On street parking is available but the surrounding roads will be busy. Many double yellow lines are in the area, so parking is increasingly scarce.

A small station car park is available. On-street parking is limited with council operated parking restrictions

There is limited car parking on the immediate approach to the station.


DISABLED PARKING: The station yard at Quorn will be available for blue badge holders and our less able-bodied visitors who do not have a blue badge. To reserve your space, please email with your name and vehicle registration details
