We're hoping to have five steam locomotives in action (details to be confirmed).

Subject to completion of overhaul we hope to present Austerity 68067 hauling its first passenger trains and the newly constructed replica Diesel Brake Tender will also be in operation.

68067 arrived at GCR in 2007 and has undergone a full overhaul.

Diesel Brake Tender - A first in preservation

At the end of the 1950’s British Railways was pressing ahead with the mass introduction of new diesel locomotives to replace the steam engine. It was soon discovered that the new diesels did not have the same braking ability as the steam engines they were replacing and not all new wagons had brakes either.  This resulted in British Railways converting a number of old carriages that were also being replaced into weights that could be used to assist the diesels when stopping these unbraked trains - the Diesel Brake Tender was created.

None survived into preservation, but a group of engineers from 'Railway Vehicle Preservations', decided to build a new one to enable demonstrations to be recreated using the extensive wagon and diesel collections based on the railway.

The Diesel Brake Tender is due to be in service all weekend.

A photo display is being staged in the General Waiting Room at Loughborough Central on both Saturday & Sunday. This has been arranged by Tim Mills and will feature photos from his archive collection of BR steam in the 1960s, especially on Southern Region lines out of Waterloo.
