Hiring: Family & Visitor Experience Co-ordinator (Part Time)

April 27, 2026

Role Purpose

To help shape and deliver the Great Central Railway’s family and group visitor experience, creating simple, engaging and memorable days out that encourage first-time visits and build repeat audiences.

This role sits at the heart of our ambition to grow the family market. It combines creativity, organisation and hands-on delivery, supporting everything from group bookings to seasonal events, while helping us evolve from a traditional heritage railway into a more immersive visitor experience.

What You’ll Be Doing

Designing Family Experiences

  • Help develop and test new ideas for family-friendly activities and experiences
(e.g. trails, crafts, themed days, light-touch storytelling)
  • Think about the visitor journey from arrival to departure and identify simple ways to make it better
  • Support the development of seasonal offers (Easter, summer holidays, Halloween, Christmas)

Delivering Events

  • Take a hands-on role in delivering small-scale events and activities
  • Lead or support the planning and delivery of larger events, particularly Santa Express
  • Be present on event days to ensure things run smoothly and visitors have a great experience

Groups & First-Time Visitors

  • Support the promotion and coordination of group bookings (coach tours, schools, community groups, clubs)
  • Act as a friendly and reliable point of contact for group organisers
  • Help ensure groups feel expected, welcomed and well looked after on the day

Education & Engagement

  • Assist in coordinating school visits and simple education offers
  • Help develop engaging, accessible content that brings the railway to life for younger audiences

Working Across the Railway

  • Collaborate with volunteers and staff across departments to deliver activities and events
  • Help bring ideas to life in a practical, achievable way within a volunteer-led environment
  • Feed back what works (and what doesn’t) to help us continuously improve

Who This Role Would Suit

We’re less interested in a long CV and more interested in mindset and potential.

You might be someone who:

  • Wants to build something, not just maintain it
You enjoy turning ideas into real experiences that people enjoy
  • Is naturally energetic and proactive
You get stuck in, take ownership and don’t wait to be asked
  • Is organised but not rigid
You can plan ahead, but you’re also comfortable adapting when things change
  • Connects easily with people
You’re at ease with families, children, volunteers and group organisers alike
  • Has a creative streak
You enjoy thinking up simple, engaging ideas and making them work in practice
  • Is resilient and positive
You stay calm and solution-focused, even on busy event days

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness to work weekends and peak periods, including school holidays and Christmas
  • Flexible approach to working hours in line with the events programme
  • An interest in heritage, visitor attractions or community engagement would be elpful, but not essential

Why This Role Matters

This role is about helping us grow our future audience.

You’ll play a key part in making the Great Central Railway more accessible, more engaging and more relevant to families and first-time visitors—while staying true to what makes it special.
