Early Autumn Passenger Trains 2020

Passenger trains, departing from Quorn & Woodhouse.

We are delighted to be operating a passenger train service on every Saturday and Sunday from 3rd October to 1st November, and on 14th/15th November. Three steam-hauled trains and one diesel train will operate each day.

Passenger trains on 1st November 2020 will operate as advertised.

National "lockdown" from 5th November to 2nd December 2020
Following the Prime Minister's announcement of a new national lockdown beginning on 5th November, our weekend passenger trains on 14th, 15th, 21st and 22nd November are postponed.

Customers who have booked online for these services will be contacted by e-mail before the close on business on Monday 2nd November with options regarding their booking.

Thank you for your support during these difficult times and we look forward to welcoming you back to the railway soon as the situation improves.

* All tickets for this event must be booked online in advance *

For the first stage of our return to operation, trains will depart from Quorn & Woodhouse station (post code LE12 8AG).

Trains will then run to the end of the line at Leicester North before returning to Quorn & Woodhouse to complete the journey (Loughborough Central will not be visited during the journey). Tickets are for a single journey between Quorn & Woodhouse and Leicester North, and return, and are for a specific timed train during this event.

Please note that it will not be possible to board or alight from the train at Loughborough Central, Rothley, or Leicester North stations during this first stage.

What's on offer?

  • Three steam-hauled trains each day with lovingly restored compartment coaches.
  • One heritage diesel railcar service during the afternoon.
  • Large car park available for passengers at Quorn & Woodhouse.
  • Butler Henderson Café will be open for refreshments.
  • The Tin Shed Bar will be open.

Enjoy a journey through the Leicestershire countryside by train, from Quorn & Woodhouse to Leicester North and back in a reserved compartment for between one and six people.

How is this experience different?

To ensure the best experience for our visitors, and in order to follow the latest advice, the following arrangements will operate:

  • Pre-booking online is essential for these trains.
  • Trains depart from Quorn & Woodhouse only.
  • We will be using compartment coaches.
  • Each order will be allocated a single compartment for their group.
  • All passengers in each compartment must be from the same family group or support "bubble".
  • Face coverings must be worn on the station platforms and when boarding the train. Face covering may be removed when seated within private compartment (please note that this may change depending on government advice at the time).
  • The station platform will not be open, except for passengers with valid tickets when boarding and alighting.
  • An efficient queuing system has been arranged for boarding the train to preserve social distancing.

A trolley service is also due to be available in ordinary passenger compartments, with some hot food on offer, subject to availability.

Initially, full meals must be booked in advance and will be served in a First Class Dining coach which is being added to the train. A number of precautions are being added to the vehicle, including specially manufactured screens between bays.

Please note that bookings for the Griddle Car will close on the Tuesday morning before each weekend of running, to allow for the ordering and delivery of supplies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are trains not running to/from Loughborough?

A: Trains will be cleaned while the train runs between Loughborough and Quorn & Woodhouse and the locomotive runs round to being the next journey. This will allow us to ensure that the train is clean when passengers begin their journey at Quorn & Woodhouse.

Q: Are face coverings required?

A: Yes - All passengers must wear face coverings on the station platform and when boarding the train. Passengers may remove face coverings when seated in their compartment, but they must be put on when leaving the compartment. Face coverings must be worn at all times on Diesel Railcar services.

Q: Are seats reserved on the train?

A: Each order will be allocated to a private compartment (except on a diesel railcar with open seating). Between one and six tickets can be purchased per order.

Q: Will I have to pay for a full compartment?

A: We are selling individual tickets for between one and six people, with each order being allocated to a compartment. All passengers on each order must from from the same household or household "bubble" as defined by current government advice.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Great Central Railway, and hope that you enjoy your visit.
