BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 92214
Designed by R. A. Riddles as part of the BR standard fleet as a heavy freight engine and was part of the last batch of steam engines built in the UK, 92214 was 1 of 251 9fs built and 1 of 9 preserved.
It was allocated to Cardiff Canton from new. In November, then to Banbury where it was used to haul the heavy ironstone trains from the Oxfordshire quarries to the steel works in South Wales. No doubt while at Banbury it picked up some of the traffic coming off the Great Central via Culworth Junction where it’s been pictured doing this work over the GCR. While at Banbury it was also employed on the fast goods services to Old Oak Common.
In the summer of 1964, it was allocated to Bath Green Park to help with the holiday excursions over the Somerset & Dorset. It is believed that No.92214 was the last 9F to operate over the line from Bath to Bournemouth. After that it went to Severn Tunnel Junction from where it was withdrawn in August 1965, less than six years after it was built In December that year.
92214 sat at Barry scrapyard from 1965 till 1980 the loco left with 92212s tender from Barry which is still has behind it now. It went to the Peak Railway Society at Buxton to start it life in preservation. Before moving to Midland Railway Centre who restored it to its former glory.
92214 arrived at the GCR on the 10th of January 2014 before the 2014 Winter Steam Gala, 92214 was purchased by Michael Gregory who was Chairman at the time and became a resident at Great Central Railway. The loco was repainted into British Railways Locomotive Green as per owner’s choice.
In 2023, 92214 was acquired by the David Clarke Railway Trust, to become a permanent member of the GCR fleet. The locomotive was repainted in authentic BR unlined black with nameplates removed as per built.
92214 is current out of traffic and its next roll is for it to enter the loco works as a static exhibit to go with the new visitor experience to allow the public to get up close and personal and look in the cab of it.
