Join us for a packed day of mixed traffic running! Expect to see a range of home fleet diesel locos and special guests D7018 and D9551 from our Autumn Diesel Gala, plus one of our home fleet steam engines in action across a busy timetable.

There’ll be passenger trains, goods workings, and a limited number of brake van rides available too – perfect for anyone who wants to get a little closer to the action. And the best bit? Kids travel for just £1

Class 35 D7018 ‘Hymek’

After an extended period of hire, this will be the last appearance for D7018 at the GCR. Don’t miss your last chance to enjoy one of 4 preserved Hymek’s on our double track mainline while you still can! Appearing curtesy of The Diesel and Electric Preservation Group and the West Somerset Railway.

No. 34072 257 Squadron

Battle of Britain class 34072, designed by Oliver Bulleid, was built in 1948 and withdrawn from BR service in 1964. This type was notable for its flat sides, to become known as ‘Spam Cans’, and unique chain driven valve gear.

Austerity 3809/18

Built in 1954 by Hunslet Engine Co, Leeds as an “Austerity” class of loco based on the War Department design. In 2008 the loco was subject to an extensive overhaul where the loco returned to service on the GCR in 2024. The loco returns to GCR having been on hire to the North Norfolk Railway.

Kids Travel for a Quid!

The best bit of Mixed Traffic Day? Kids can travel for just £1 each! With every adult ticket, you can bring up to three children (aged 3–15) for just a quid per child. It’s an affordable way to enjoy a day of trains, fun, and adventure together.

Brake Van Rides

If you want to get closer to the action during the Mixed Traffic Day on 7th September, we will be running a limited number of brake van rides throughout the day. Each journey will start at Quorn before heading to Rothley Brook, back to Loughborough then back to Quorn aboard a variety of different diesel locomotives – with the experience lasting around 1 hour. It’s the perfect way to complete your day of Mixed Traffic Running!

Brake Van Ride tickets must be purchased in accompaniment with a runabout ticket.

Stations Information

When purchasing a runabout ticket, you will have access to travel on all our standard passenger trains throughout the day, allowing you to hop on and off to explore all our historic stations.
