New Book Release – Great Central Electric

September 17, 2025

We’re delighted to share news of a brand-new publication by Mark Beckett, Director of the Great Central Railway.

Great Central Electric is a fascinating “what if” story that reimagines the Great Central Main Line between Sheffield Victoria and London Marylebone – exploring what might have happened if the route had never closed.

Set in the year 2025, the book is written as an “operating manual” for the railway, complete with timetables, rolling stock plans, signalling details, track layouts, and even a full Sectional Appendix. It imagines a landmark moment in the railway’s history – the commissioning of the final phase of the £1.5bn “Great Central Electrification Programme” and the introduction of brand-new electric trains into service.

Drawing on his experience at the heart of Chiltern Railways’ expansion, as well as his current role here at the Great Central Railway, Mark has created a vision that feels both authentic and compelling. The result is a richly detailed look at how, with the right investment and management, the Great Central could have thrived into the modern day.

This high-quality, glossy, A4 publication runs to 196 full-colour pages and is available in both paperback and hardback. All profits will go directly to supporting the Great Central Railway.

How you can help

Support the future of the Great Central Railway by donating today.
Your generous contribution helps safeguard this unique heritage line, not only through the landmark Reunification project—which will reconnect two separate heritage railways to create an eighteen-mile route from the north of Leicester to the south of Nottingham—but also in the vital day-to-day running of the railway.
Donations directly support the maintenance and restoration of our stations and locomotives, the preservation of historic infrastructure, and the training and development of our dedicated staff and volunteers. They ensure the railway continues to thrive as both a living museum and a community resource.
By giving, you’re helping us preserve one of Britain’s most cherished heritage railways, so that future generations can step aboard, experience authentic steam and diesel travel, and discover the stories of the past. Every contribution, large or small, makes a lasting difference in keeping the spirit of the Great Central Railway alive.
