What’s with the blue mushrooms?

September 21, 2025

The ground investigation machines might have gone but there’s still more activity to come on the Reunification route.

The team left behind 17 boreholes which have each been capped with a blue pipe. They are spread over the 500 metres between the existing embankment in the north and at the foot of the canal bridge in the south.

Technicians will be making repeat visits to the site in the coming months to inspect the holes. They are looking for any ground gasses being released and to monitor ground water levels. Both of these measurements are essential to meet our planning consent conditions and to assist with the design of the foundations for the different bits of infrastructure we need to build.

Meanwhile the samples of rock removed during the ground investigation work are now in the lab being analysed. Watch the video below to hear from the experts. Please consider a donation to the project to keep us moving forward
